Kikar HaShabbat

Amnon Yitschak (AY) is a hot head baal teshuva (BT) who lacks daas and sechel, a common problem with many fanatical "born again" types, and in this case AY is a leader, actually he is a "Frankenstein" that was created by the same rabbis he is now fighting and who are now in the process of defanging him and hopefully putting him down once and for all.

Like the "Troppenstein monster" that was created from pumping in big money and access to gedolim who gave him too much support too soon, in Tropper's case for his aim to "raise" the standards of conversions/kiruv, and in AY's case to make secular Israelis frum en masse. But in each scenario it went to their heads that could not hold such power and influence being that they are upstarts and nobodies.

AY ran his corrupt "Shofar" organization and some of its top honchos have been accused of immoral deeds and corruption, but that had no traction.

AY went on campaigns encouraging people to smash their TVs and boycott the Jewish singers, which on the surface sounds nice and frum, but really was just too extreme and showed how unbalanced his approach was.

But the big rabbis looked the other way, and now it has come back to haunt them, because now that AY is eating away at their power base and wants to take away the Sefardi voters that Shas needs, they are turning on him in cannibal style.

AY has made serious errors and blunders by attacking the venerated Rav Ovadya Yosef who is genuinely a gadol and has been big and famous before AY was even born.

One does not have to agree with every pesak of Harav Ovadia Yosef, and many Ashkenazi rabbonim and poskim have disagreed with him, but he has published major seforim proving his bona fides as a true gadol in the Torah world and certainly in the world of Sefardim and anshei hamizrach, he is the posek ha'acharon for them and it it suicide to try to take him on head first, which AY in his immaturity has now done, without having anyone of equal stature to back him up.

AY has tried to drag the Israeli Ashkenazi gedolim into this by seeming to have the backing of Rav Kanievsky and Rav Shteinman but they are not taking his bait even though AY is trying to twist their words, in another sign of his (AY's) political immaturity and lack of sechel by trying to ignite a thermonuclear war between the Ashkenazi and Sefardi gedolim just to save his skin.

    AY has gotta go.

  2. How could you say "AY has gotta go."?

Who else in the WORLD can cure infertility with a mitpachat?

And if you look at the ancient TV's/CRT's that AY's followers are smashing in their demolition derbies, you can see that this is purely entertainment:

What I believe should be of concern is AY's recent interest in "kiruv" to Hispanic/Latino Gentiles.

  3. Doesn't the Gemara say somewhere that woe to a city that its leader is a talmid chochom? And if the gemara says this, why should people vote for talmidei chachomim and their political parties? Seems like they cause more mess than they clean up.

    1. Not sure what you are referring to. I only could find

Shabbos (11a): Raba b. Mehasia also said in the name of R. Hama b. Goria in Rab's name: [Let one be] under an Ishmaelite but not under a ‘stranger’; under a stranger but not under a Gueber; under a Parsee but not under a scholar; under a scholar but not under an orphan or a widow.

    2. Perhaps you are referring to this?

Igros Moshe (Volume 8 Introduction page 27): Active involvement of gedolei Torah in politics - also in Israel - aroused [Rav Moshe Feinstein’s] opposition. He used to say that greatness in Torah is not combined with expertise in politics.

    3. Regarding the above, there is an article in Mishpacha, quoting Rav Ephraim Greenblat, that Rav Moshe once considered moving to Eretz Yisroel, but was advised against it.
The following is a quote from the article:
Did he ever consider moving to Eretz
      Yisrael?
“There was a time that he did, after an
      important delegation of rabbanim came
and offered him the position of chief rabbi
of Jerusalem, after the passing of Rav Tzvi
Pesach Frank. He hesitated and deliberated,
until the rebbetzin said she did not want to
leave America because her children lived
there. There was a time when he thought to
      come alone.
“I know all this, because at the time I
was traveling to visit my parents. When I
came to bid him farewell, he said to me, ‘I
have a shlichus for you. Go to Rav Michel
Feinstein [his nephew] and Rav Dovid
Soloveitchik, and tell them I have been
offered the rabbanus of Yerushalayim, and
ask whether I should accept or not.’ Rav
Feinstein firmly said he should not come.
‘It’s very political in Israel. From the US
he manages the world undisturbed,’ he
      explained. Rav Soloveitchik had similar
sentiments. ‘Why should he enter the
rabbanut?’ When I returned to the US, I
delivered the messages, and the subject was
      closed.”

    4. It is a Geamara in the 10th perek of Pesachim. It was a Tanna's advice to another Tanna.

"Avraham said...Doesn't the Gemara say somewhere that woe to a city that its leader is a talmid chochom? And if the gemara says this, why should people vote for talmidei chachomim and their political parties? Seems like they cause more mess than they clean up."

So according to you, people should vote for am haratzim ignoramusus with no experience in politics at all instead? Where is the logic in that? You fail to realize the realities of the Israeli political system (do you what a political system is? in case you don't see the Wikipedia article "Political system is a system of politics and government. It is usually compared to the legal system, economic system, cultural system, and other social systems. However, this is a very simplified view of a much more complex system of categories involving the views: who should have authority, how religious questions should be handled, and what the government's influence on its people and economy should be....")

Now, in the Israeli political system, given that the Jewish people have Judaism as their religion, there have always been RABBIS involved with its politics and religious issues are always involved at all times (whether pro, anti or neutral). The fact that the Israeli political system and election to the 120 member Knesset is based on proportional representation (and NOT on a "winner take all" system of majority votes) there have always been religious parties in the Israeli Knesset, ranging from the old time Mizrachi, to Agudat Yisrael (presently dominated by Chasidim loyal to Ger and Vizhnitz mostly), now also split with Degel HaTorah (founded by Rav Shach himself) united as "UTJ" or Yahadut haTorah. A few years before Rav E Shach passed away he encouraged and guided Rav Ovadya Yosef to found the Shas party. Now Amnon Yitschak (AY) wants to arbitrarily defy the life's work of the Aguda Gedolim, and spit on the party led by Rav Ovadya Yosef, all for what? To claim he will be less corrupt? He will give free pita and chumus and arak to everyone, with some agvaniyot thrown in? Not likely, because politics corrupts everyone, since power corrupts. But that is still no "heter" for AY's scorched earth attacks that will hurt the very people he claims to want to help. It is very hard to see how AY can defy Rav Yosef given Rav Yosef's stature and reputation in not just the Sefardi world but in the Torah world at large where he is considered a genuine Gadol, while AY, for all his charisma, is just a BT pipsqueek and amateur who is now learning his lessons the hard way. It will get worse for him if he does not back off from his attacks.

  5. Recipients, I think you need to be more specific about what exactly RAY has done wrong. Being a hot head BT isn't a sin.

  6. Hi R Eidonsohn,

I'm referring to Pesachim 112 a - see the maamar of R Akiva and what he commanded his son Rabbi Yehoshua. There seems to be a clear difference between learning and being sufficiently meorav and involved in communal issues. At least thats what it seems like from the gemara.

The following indicates that the day to day work should not be a talmid chachom, doctor or other involved heavily in a profession. This was the general rule in Europe. However that doesn't preclude seeking the advise of a talmid chachom on major policty issues.
